Rio Grande Valley Communities
The Valley is a four county region in South Texas along the US-Mexico Border and the Gulf of Mexico. The counties are Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy. The more populous ones are Hidalgo and Cameron. Both of these have numerous small cities and towns. The entire region has over 1.2 million residents.
Hidalgo County is is the largest county in our region and in the Top 10 of Texas with a population of almost 900,000. The largest cities are McAllen (138K), Edinburg (84K), Mission (82K), Pharr (75K), Weslaco (39K) and San Juan (36K). All the other towns have less than 20K each.
Cameron County is Number 13 on the Texas list with over 400,000 population. The largest city in South Texas is my hometown of Brownsville with a population of 182K. Brownsville has an extremely rich history and been of strategic importance since the war with Mexico in 1846. Both countries were claiming this region and created the current border with Mexico. Only two other cities are larger than 10K. They are Harlingen (66K) and San Benito (24K). Cameron County is also home to South Padre Island, a vacation resort along the Texas Gulf Coast.
The Mexican side of the border has even larger population. Matamoros is across from Brownsville with 570K and Reynosa is across from McAllen with 917K. This entire region has benefited from cross border business activity. Since NAFTA was enacted in 1993, the growth has been exponential. The manufacturing facilities on the Mexican side (maquiladoras) are a crucial component of the Texas and US economies. Today, new industries spearheaded by SpaceX along the border will keep our region growing.
